Party Statements: Support the Struggle of the APPO |

By Raul Cano, SP USA
Co-Chair
From the
SPUSA Statement of Principles:”No
oppressed group has ever been liberated except by its own organized
efforts to overthrow its oppressors. A society based on radical
democracy, with power exercised through people's organizations,
requires a socialist transformation from below. People's organizations
cannot be created by legislation, nor can they spring into being only
on the eve of a revolution. They can grow only
in the course of popular struggles, especially those of women, labor,
and minority groups. The Socialist Party works to build these
organizations democratically.”
What started as a teachers strike and quickly evolved into a grassroots
movement involving students, indigenous groups and the public, the
Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) has been struggling
against the oppressive state government of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz for
months.
The APPO quickly organized themselves into workers’ and peoples
assemblies that democratically coordinated the massive protests that
have paralyzed the capital city of Oaxaca for months. Para military
groups under the direction of the
PRI and Governor Ruiz have terrorized and murdered the teachers and
community activists that have been involved in this non-violent
movement.
What was for months only of interest for leftist circles in our country
has now come to the center of our media due to the death of Brad Will,
a documentary filmmaker and Indymedia reporter from New York
City. President Fox has since dispatched the Federal Preventive
Police (PFP) to retake the capital. Currently the APPO and PFP are in a
street-by-street battle to control the capital city.
Consistent with our principles and our international support of
peoples' movements, the Socialist Party supports the struggle of the
APPO for workers’ rights and radical democracy. We condemn the
repressive actions of Fox's government and the paramilitary
groups associated with Governor Ruiz and the PRI. We support the
efforts of the APPO, La Otra Campaña (the other campaign), the
Zapatistas and all those who are fighting for true democracy in Mexico.
These groups represent an example for all of us who struggle for
radical democracy.
